Megan Lilach from Wisconsin, US, and her partner met on Tinder and moved in together two months later. They often discussed tying the knot and he had often told her he had big plans for the proposal.

However, the 22-year-old woman was left stunned when he told her to check her phone while the pair enjoyed a meal out together, only for her to discover the social media 'proposal'.

Explaining how their relationship quickly went downhill after that night, Megan says, "He was working away at the time, so I had driven to see him and spend the night at his hotel."

The pair decided to go out for a Chinese dinner and found the nearest restaurant on Google as they were not familiar with the area.

"It wasn't a special place to us or anything," Megan says, adding that she thought he was planning to propose at her 21st birthday party, which was in two weeks' time.

"But then he said that while we were at dinner, it 'just felt right.'"

Megan's partner had been playing on his phone all through the meal, and then he told her to check her phone. "I looked at it, and I just said 'really?' I couldn't believe it. I have no idea what was going through his head," she says.

The proposal meant that Megan's family found out about the engagement through Facebook and were upset as they felt left out of the loop.

Two weeks later, at Megan's birthday party, the ex allegedly told guests it was an impromptu engagement celebration, which left the would-be bride in tears.

The pair eventually split six months after the proposal following a final-straw argument on Valentine's Day last year.

Now the stylist is hoping to trade her old engagement ring in – which the couple bought together after the proposal – for a new piece of jewellery to celebrate a year of being apart from her ex.

"Even now, I struggle to laugh about it when I look back," Megan says.
