New year, new gym gear, right?

There’s nothing like new gym gear to get you motivated! And it doesn’t have to cost the earth. Especially when you’re just starting and you’re still figuring out what sport or fitness programme you like best.

We’ve put together a basic gym gear list that will take you from Zumba to yoga to Rumble!

The top

This vest is comfortable, it has a relaxed fit and it’s stretchy. We like the longer length for days when you want a bit of bum cover, but you can also tie it in a knot or tuck it in for different looks. The key-hole detail at the back is gorgeous! Price: R60

The leggings

These leggings feature quick-drying, sweat-wicking Dri-Sport tech. They have a wide waist band for extra comfort around the tummy area and a nifty pocket at the back to stash a locker key and some cash.

The mesh panel detail adds a touch of glam and you can totally take these leggings from gym sesh to shopping expedition. Gym gear goals! Price: R199

The sports bra

Don’t mess around with a low-impact sports bra or crop. If you’re going to invest some money in a sports bra, rather get something you can do everything in, from skipping to box jumping without worrying about your boobs flopping all over the place (ouch!).

Go for high-impact! We love the zip detail on this racerback bra, which also looks like a crop top. Price: R299

The shoes

For all those exercise newbies, take note: gym shoes (or shoes meant for the different types of studio classes and gym training movements) are not running shoes. And vice versa.

These Stepper Gym + Studio Trainer shoes are lightweight, flexible and have enhanced stability for a wider range of exercises and are designed for gym and studio training.

You can do some short distance running on the treadmill with these, but, if you’d like to commit to running as your sport of choice, you’ll need to invest in proper running shoes. Price: R329

The socks

Socks are so often overlooked as valuable sports equipment. But having the right socks will mean comfort and no blisters! Remember that socks should fit snugly on your foot, but not be overly tight. And no cotton for sweat sessions.

These socks have max breathability and comfort. They feature a reinforced toe and heel for durability and comfort while training. Engineered for proper sweat sessions, including running. Price: R60
