6 ways the sun can harm your eyesight

accreditation

During summer and the holiday season, many South Africans spend much of their time outdoors without realising that their eyes are being exposed to various hazards.

Eyesight is a valuable sense that is often taken for granted. Loss of central vision is irreversible, but early signs of serious eye problems can be detected with regular eye examinations. Many of these conditions can still be treated and avoided.

Six facts about your vision and the effects of the sun:

•    Your eyes can get sunburnt.
•    Reflected UV-sunrays are just as damaging as direct rays.
•    Water reflects up to 100% UV-sunrays.
•    Morning (08:00 to 10:00) and late afternoon (14:00 to 16:00) sun is twice as damaging to vision than the midday sun.
•    5-10% of skin cancers occur on the eyelid as a result of over-exposure to UV-sunrays.
•    Overcast days can be just as harmful to the eyes as approximately 40% of UV-sunrays reach the eyes when you are outside.
