Breast augmentation: what you need to know

accreditation

Breast augmentation is a popular procedure these days and something that many women are willing to undertake for a whole variety of good reasons. However, it is dangerous and comes with a lot of stress.

Here are some tips to help you relax about it.

Be prepared for the unexpected

You may well have pre-conceived ideas about what you want to do with your breasts and what size you want them to be.

You should, however, be prepared for your doctor to throw you a curveball if they don’t think your requirements are achievable.

The surgeon will have carried out many procedures and will therefore have a very good idea as to what will work and what won’t.

If you want to go from a 34A to a 34B but your skin is too elastic, then be prepared for advice that might be that you would be better going for a full C instead.

Have everything ready at home

When you return home after the surgery, the last thing you will probably want to do in the first few days is some domestic chores.

It would be wise to clean the house and do the laundry before you go in for surgery and also buy any new bras that you will be needing beforehand.

That way, when you get home, it will be less stressful and you won’t have to strain yourself to get everything done.

Take advice on drugs
You may well be more than comfortable with just some ibuprofen to provide some pain relief after the surgery, but don’t be afraid to ask your doctor for something stronger if you think you might need a bit of help to get you through the first few days after the procedure.

Get used to your new breasts

It may be your own body, but some women can be reluctant to touch their breasts shortly after surgery, as they think it might hurt them to do so.

Go ahead and touch them. It may feel a bit weird at first but if you take it slowly, it can actually help a little with the initial pain.

If you gently massage them, you can actually help the pain to fade with fewer meds required.

Some women describe the feeling of their new breasts as something like having bowling balls on your chest.

It is probably going to feel a little bit weird shortly after surgery and a week or so later, it might also feel like your milk is coming in. If you have had a baby, you will know what that feels like.

Take it easy

If you talk to a good number of women who have had the same procedure, you will find that the majority of them will say that is best to try and take it as easy as possible for the first couple of weeks post-op.

Get yourself a good book and a stack of movies to watch and aim to avoid any overexertion for about six weeks after surgery if can manage it.

New you, new wardrobe

Your breast implants will have a positive effect on your body shape and hopefully your confidence. To enjoy the benefits of your breast augmentation you should aim to find clothes that reflect the new energy and outlook on life that you are probably now feeling.

Look to pick clothes that are well suited to your new curvier physique and try to avoid dresses that offer minimal support, like a bandage dress. This can actually squeeze and constrict your breasts.

You may have felt lacking in confidence before you had breast augmentation, but with a new you comes a new wardrobe. Search for what now feels right for your new body shape and even consider getting clothes that are custom-fitted to your body’s new dimensions.

The overall advice is to not be afraid of asking as many questions as you want to until you are as happy as you can be about what lies ahead. The advice from women who have been there and done that already, can be valuable.
