I will do what makes me happy this year

Most years I’ve made New Year’s resolutions with much determination and most years end with me not achieving everything on my list.

Oh all right, let me be honest - most of the time I’m happy to have visited the gym enough times to keep my membership active.

Last year I started something new – I made a list of things that would make me happy. Not thinner or richer or any of the usual resolutions we write down at the beginning of each year.

I decided not to study through work for a certificate that my heart wasn’t in.

Instead I planned to devote time to doing what I love such as writing. I continued with my blog, started a journal and signed up for National Novel Writing Month.

It was so easy because doing something you enjoy doesn’t seem like a chore, it feels like a treat. It makes perfect sense to continue with this in 2014.

Last year I spent time with friends who brought joy to my life and distanced myself from those who prefer gossip and drama. I met new friends, tried new restaurants and even became part of a supper club which is lots of fun.

Being able to make very few edible dishes in the kitchen, I focused on my strengths which is baking. Apparently I make mean scones and cupcakes and so I signed up for a cake decorating course. This year I aim to do more as I’ve found baking (and the decorating afterwards) to be a great way to relax.

Another to-do on my list is to deal with stress. Not let it build up and take over. I’m learning to say no more often and to feel less guilty when I do so.  It isn’t easy and doesn’t happen overnight.

Also, leaving work stress at the office is a goal. I don’t take my ironing to work, so why mull over a heated conversation with a colleague after hours?

It won’t happen instantly but on the whole I’d say my resolutions for 2014 are doable and enjoyable and most of all, they make me happy.  In all honesty I think that should be top priority on everyone’s to-do list.

Here is to a year filled with happiness, being kinder to ourselves and saying no to stress instead of carbs.
