#OwnYourHealth in your 20s

accreditation
Each week, we’ll be focussing on the health care needs of women in different age-bands, to help you ensure you tread the path the good health.

There are many screening tests and examinations that healthy women between the ages group of 20-29 can undertake. While some tests can be conducted at home, a visit to GP is never a bad idea.

Make self-exams part of your routine

- Look for anything unusual such as changing moles, freckles and growths.

- Do a monthly breast examination – keeping an eye out for lumps, masses, rashes or discharge.

- Keep an eye on your monthly cycle, increased bleeding, longer cycles, clots and pelvic pain may indicate more severe underlying causes.

Prevention is better than cure

Screening tests provide valuable information at an earlier stage of disease, often before it becomes more serious. Early detection will help put preventive strategies in place together with the supervision of a medical doctor to get your back to good health.

These tests include:

- PAP smears which help to detect cervical cancer. Women in their 20s should get a pap smear at least once every two years.

- Blood pressure and blood glucose tests which may show whether you are at risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular conditions.

- BMI tests help to indicate whether an individual is overweight. 7 out of 10 South African women are overweight putting them at an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and osteoarthritis.

As an added bonus many of these tests are likely to be covered by your medical aids – making it great for your financial well-being too.
