Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Last year alone, research showed that PCOS was in fact quite common and affects up to 4% to 18% of all women. The imbalance of hormones has the ability to cause changes in the menstrual cycle, skin changes, small cysts in the ovaries, hinders the opportunity for women to get pregnant, as well other health related problems.

The female sex hormones comprise of estrogen and progesterone and as well as androgens, which are referred to as ‘male hormones’ that can also be found in women. Hormones serve the purpose of assisting women in regulating the normal development of eggs in the ovaries during each menstrual cycle. Sacs that are situated in the ovaries that contain eggs are known as follicles.

In most cases, one or more eggs are released during each menstrual cycle, which is termed as ovulation. With PCOS, the eggs that are stored in the follicles do not mature and are not released from the ovaries. They therefore form very small cysts in the ovary. Changes such as this, contribute to the common problem of infertility.

Women who find that they have PCOS are usually in their 20’s and 30’s, but it has also been known to affect female teenagers. This condition can be said to be hereditary because the women who have this condition, in most cases have a sister and or/ mother who possesses similar symptoms to those of PCOS.

Symptoms that have been linked to PCOS include changes in the menstrual cycle, such as absent periods and irregular menstrual periods. Other symptoms include diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, not forgetting weight gain and the increasing health phenomena as well as obesity.*
