This woman documented her mastectomy in an amazingly creative photo series

accreditation
After testing positive for the BRCA1 genetic mutation at age 25, actress Aniela McGuinness decided to have bilateral mastectomy at age 30 as a preventative measure in the fight against her high risk of developing breast cancer -just as Angelina Jolie once did.

According to Buzzfeed, the results of Aniela's last MRI scan, before her surgery, showed that she had developed stage 1 ductal breast cancer, but rather than crushing her confidence and feelings about her health, the results comforted McGuinness in her choice to have both of her breasts removed.

But Aniela did not let her empowered choice slip under the radar. The actress documented her journey before and after a successful surgery and during her chemotherapy with the hope of shaking people up from the usual medical before–and-after photos that are usually so serious.

McGuiness’ photos are quite artsy and are exceptionally empowering.

While Aniela shows the world the how hard this experience can be, she also proves that no matter what we go through, we can find strength, joy, and humour in our struggles too.

Aniela owned her struggle and so can you.
