VEDA Debunks 2 Egg Donation Myths

It’s human nature to try and make sense of things we don’t understand, and we use snippets of information to fill in the gaps of our own comprehension.

However, at some point it’s important to get the right info, and the proper facts. If you’re looking for accurate insight into the issue of egg donation, VEDA can help you sort the facts from the fiction.

As a full-service egg donation agency that operates from one of South Africa’s oldest and most reputable fertility clinics, VEDA has the right info. Let’s take a look at the most common myths:

1. If I donate my eggs I might run out

The good news is that by donating eggs in a month you don’t intend on conceiving, you pose absolutely no threat to your own fertility. The reason for this is that, from the time we’re born, women have a set number of eggs. We produce between 100 and 1000 each month, of which only one becomes available for fertilization.

This means that if you opt to donate a batch, which you wouldn’t be using anyway, you will continue to ovulate as usual after the cycle of egg donation.

The process of harvesting your eggs doesn’t make you produce less eggs once you’ve undergone the retrieval process. You may produce a few more while you’re being treated with fertility meds, but once you’re off them, your body will return to normal.

2. The process is horribly invasive

It’s easy to understand why people think this is true. To some extent, gynaecological procedures are invasive, but egg donation and retrieval are not so.

To begin with, egg donors do receive fertility medication to stimulate the development of egg follicles, and these meds come in the form of injections. At VEDA, donors are taught how to inject themselves, but they also have the option of coming in to the clinic to have a nurse administer the jab.

When it comes to the actual retrieval, the donor is given conscious sedation which leads to the procedure being relatively painless, as it’s done while you’re asleep. It takes 10 to 15 minutes, and the donor is able to return home about an hour afterwards, under the supervision of a family or friend.

As a full-service agency, VEDA is able to minimise the discomfort even further.  We ensure that by the time of retrieval, the donor has met with the specialists on numerous occasions, and has been able to discuss and understand the process. A further consideration is that we have qualified in-house counsellors on hand to chat with donors at any point in their egg donation journey.

The truth

When it comes to egg donation, it’s best to get first-hand advice. Even this article could be filled with hearsay. So how do you get the facts you need to make your own decision? Simple: contact VEDA and speak to one of our egg donation specialists about your concerns and questions. At the very least, they’ll put your mind to rest, and give you food for thought.
