Gyms get inundated with memberships at the start of each year as everyone wants to get back into shape and burn away holiday fat. And, if you’re a first-time gym goer, the sweaty crowds could throw you off.

Here are Sbahle’s top tips on hitting the gym for the first time:

THE ESSENTIALS

When going to the gym, always have a towel and a water bottle. Try putting some amino acid in your water and sip that throughout your training session.

You should buy supplements that aren’t too hectic. A good protein mix will be fine. A complete multi vitamin pill is also a good way to get your body going before strenuous exercise.

GET STARTED

Since you’re new at the gym, it’s best to begin with classes. Check schedules on when classes are and you can pick what works for you.

Sbahle recommends:

Spinning as it pushes you and is good for toning your lower body, especially your thighs and legs.

Body conditioning is a great full-body workout to tone or lose weight.

Grid classes are intense but you can start slow and get a sense of your fitness levels before moving on to the next level.

FINAL NOTE

Starting gym is great but one should remember a great body is made in the kitchen. So watch what you eat.
