The holidays are here and there’s no better way to relax than to curl up on the couch with a good Christmas movie to get you and your family in the festive mood.

But with so many Christmas movies to choose from you may not know where to start and end up fighting over the remote.

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. These five are our personal favourites – and they may just be the greatest Xmas family movies of all time.

Home Alone

First on our list is the ever-popular Home Alone. It’s hailed as a holiday classic by many and is often ranked as one of the best Christmas films of all time.

This hilarious film about the bumbling burglars who meet their match in a child left home alone while his family goes on holiday might not sound like Christmas fare, but some unexpectedly sweet scenes will make you remember the true spirit of the holiday.

The Preacher’s Wife

This flick is a sweet and good-hearted comedy about the holiday season, which we suppose is enough. It tells the story of an inner-city pastor who becomes disheartened by his never-ending struggle, asks God for help, and gets it in the form of an angel from above.

The Preacher’s Wife stars Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington, and when you listen to the soundtrack, it will put you in the Christmas spirit – the music is timeless.

The Best Man Holiday

Share in the laughter, love and surprises as old friends reunite for the first time in years. When college friends get together, they soon discover how easy it is to relive long-forgotten rivalries and romances, all while new discoveries are made and secrets are revealed.

In the end, the balance between comedy and drama pays off. The Best Man Holiday is the comedy that critics are calling “a feel-good celebration”.

Love Actually

When it comes to holiday movies that will rip your heart out, tear it in to a million pieces, then put it back together and somehow leave you with restored faith in humanity, Love Actually is one of the best.

This Christmas-themed romantic comedy, set in London, delves into the different aspects of love. The tale is told through 10 separate stories involving different people, but many of them are linked in some way, which comes out as the story progresses.

The flick starts five weeks before Christmas and plays out in a weekly countdown up until the actual Christmas holiday. It ends with a short scene set a month later.

Last Christmas

We end our list with a new release. You know Christmas is around the corner when theatrical releases drop. Last Christmas is an unexpectedly entertaining movie which holds a strong message about being able to embrace inclusion and multiculturalism. It’s also about the value of gratitude, giving and forgiving, and the importance of family and helping others so you’re able to see your ultimate purpose in life and find true happiness. The ultimate touching twist at the end is so emotional and if you’re an emotional being you’re guaranteed to be in tears.

This is a definite must-see movie and even though it’s not a classic or an all-time favourite because it’s new, give it a couple of years – it will definitely stay on the list, there’s no doubt about that.
