Active bodies, empowered lives!

Did you know that drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury related deaths?

According to the World Health Organisation, there are an estimated 388 000 annual deaths as a result from drowning worldwide.

In South Africa at least one child drowns every single day. For every child that drowns, at least five undergo permanent brain damage.

What’s even more alarming is that 90% of these cases happen under supervision.  This problem prompted an urgent reaction from Juliette Ball.

In 2007, Juliette Ball founded Development Through Sport. It is a self-funding NGO that focuses on teaching their ‘learn to swim programme’ to previously disadvantaged children and young adults living in Hout Bay, Cape Town and Surrounds.

On Friday, 13 September at 18h30, Ocean Love is hosting a special fundraising event at Ta-Da! Crêperie and Coffee Bar at the Boardroom in Hout Bay. The purpose of this event will be to raise awareness and funds for Development Through Sport.

At the event Juliette Ball, who also owns Ocean Love Events and Marketing , will present slides and videos of her recent expedition to Greenland where she paddled on a SUP (stand up paddleboard) 100Km through Sermilik Fjord. The proceeds from this expedition were directed to the international charity project called Polar Bears and Paddleboards.

Juliette, and a group of other passionate paddlers, completed the challenge with the intention of creating awareness on ocean conservation and community uplifting and empowerment through water safety.

All funds raised at the event will go to continuing the great work Juliette and her team are doing with previously disadvantaged kids.

Juliette and the Development Through Sport team have been working with a number of children, watching them grow and witnessing their swimming skills radically improve. Some of the children who have advanced through the programme have helped with the coaching, and others have moved to high school where they have joined waterpolo teams, and school swimming teams.

Those that can demonstrate a sufficient level of competence in the swimming pool are introduced into the club nipper programme at the Llandudno Lifesaving Club, where their skills are further developed with a view to training them to become qualified lifeguards and retain them as active club members.

Since its inception four years ago, the development programme has already produced qualified nippers who are now competing at a national level.

The development programme is entirely self-funded and the club does not receive corporate sponsorship or government grants in order to sustain the programme. The club hosts a quarterly swimming event series called the Llandudno Swim Series, the proceeds of which are used to cover the operating costs of the programme.
