I lost my lover, friend and better half

accreditation

In light of the beautiful Sheryl Sandberg tribute and Carmen Williams' column on grief, our readers share their personal stories of loss with us:

I lost my husband to a sudden massive heart attack. He was my life the reason for my existence, the better half of me. We had been married for 17 years and together for 24 ½ years.

He was only 46 years old and there was no indication of any health problems. He was not overweight, didn’t smoke or drink, ate healthy, however when the autopsy report was done she mentioned that there was a hereditary problem with his heart.

It has been such a difficult part of my life that I would not wish on my worst enemy. It is not just the loneliness and the emptiness, but also the fact that now you need to learn how to do everything on your own from financial problems to work problems to personal problems.

If it weren’t for my two beautiful daughters I don’t know that I would have got through this, they have been my reason for living.

I had the most wonderful, supportive, loving, caring and considerate husband ever. It's true what they say: we never fully appreciate what we have until we lose it. He was a wonderful husband, father, friend and lover who gave the kids and myself everything and more.

All I can say is the emptiness (the hole in your heart) never goes away. You just learn to live with it. Talking about your loved one definitely helps and eases the pain a little.

I personally don’t think that even meeting someone else could ever take away the pain , as you always end up comparing what you had, and the next person will never be good enough if you had a happy and fulfilling marriage.

Love and appreciate your loved ones, instead of being selfish and fighting about stupid things, because once they are gone you will never get that time back.

My love, thoughts and prayers are with all who have lost loved ones.
