“Resistance flies out of the window when I see sugar”

accreditation
We’ve all heard too many verses of this song before. First it was the scary salt, and then it was the wicked fat that had to be avoided at all cost.

And somewhere in-between there were all those naughty carbs as well. Now it’s sugar’s turn. Tra-la-la-la-la, la-la-di-da...

I am not for a minute suggesting that tons of sugar is a great choice, but let’s just opt for moderation. The old adage of ‘a little of what you fancy does you good” still holds.

Our grandparents and all before them never turned their noses up at a good roly-poly pudding or a cinnamon pancake and neither should we. Deprivation does not make for a happy life. - Barbra

In recent months I have become more mindful about what my family and I eat. My husband has been nagging me about it for a long time too, but I have always believed that since the kids always had biscuits, sweets and chocolate in moderation, they were okay overall.

I began my journey of research in January and have come to realise just how much sugar (and other unhealthy stuff) there are in so many of the foods we eat. Even corn flakes have so much sugar in it and we add more.

Juice is a hidden culprit, since so many fruits have to be used to make a glass, and all the good fibre is missing. And don't get me started on the reconstituted part! (Check the ingredients of your juice, chances are it is reconstituted). Lots of sugar is added to low fat yogurt to make it taste better.

It's a slow process, but the more I learn, the more we are adapting. My kids are not always thrilled, but they get it eventually. We haven't completely eliminated sugar, but we are mindful about what we eat now, all of us, including the kids.

Since I don't have much of a sweet tooth either, my "vice" are chips (French fries). Mindfulness and resistance somehow fly through the window at the sight of them. – Nausheen
