The 8th annual Jet Community Awards is officially open for entries with more than R1 million in prize money up for grabs for local community heroes from South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland.

For the past seven years, the Jet Community Awards has been celebrating the extraordinary achievements of ordinary people working within impoverished communities from across Southern Africa.

Representing retail brand Jet's flagship community upliftment programme, the annual Jet Community Awards aim to reward those individuals or organisations who give selflessly of their time, energy and talents to build and empower families and vulnerable individuals at grass roots level.

Says Jet Club Manager, Antashia Sassman, "Every year, more and more citizens from the competitions' five participating countries are contributing to meaningful social transformation.

After honouring seven national winners and 42 regional winners in last year's Jet Community Awards Programme, we invite even more entries this year, and look forward to rewarding the extraordinary achievements of a new generation of community heroes in the 2010 Jet Community Awards.”

The Jet Community Awards invites entries annually from citizens of South Africa (made up of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Gauteng, North West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and Free State provinces), Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland, specific to those individuals or organisations that have made a compelling contribution to the wellbeing of their communities.

The 2010 Awards will recognise community projects and grass roots organisations in the four categories of "Education”, honouring organisations and individuals focusing on school-level programmes of excellence in literacy, maths, science and technology;  "We Care”, organisations / individuals who focus on (a) people with disabilities, specifically in terms of care, support and empowerment, as well as initiatives that deal with people with disabilities and (b) Abused women and Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC) specifically affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic; "Vukuzenzele” which recognises entrepreneurs and development centres that help create jobs and stimulate economic development.

There are three awards within this category – namely awarding black (African, Coloured, Asian) women in business; youths in business (18 – 35) and small businesses in rural areas; and "Environmental Waste Management” which recognises organisations / individuals that focus on reducing or eliminating waste production as far as possible so that there is less impact on the environment.

Since the Awards launched in 2003, Jet has received thousands of entries, and awarded almost R5 million in prize money to 36 overall winners, who are obliged to reinvest their winnings into community building initiatives. Last year the R1 million prize money was shared between seven winners and 42 exceptional regional finalists from across Southern Africa as part of a first-of-its-kind 24 day national road show to pay tribute to 2009's community heroes.

The 2009 Jet Community Awards Convoy visited each of the regional winners together with celebrity host Fezile Mpela and local community leaders from each of the competitions 13 regions, travelling 6 018 km's from Soweto to Ga-Rankuwa to hand over the R15 000 in prize money to each regional winner. The seven national winners were announced at an Awards event in Johannesburg where each winning project was awarded R75 000 in cash including R1 000 in Jet shopping vouchers.

Last year's winners include a Grade 12 tutoring programme from Mmakau in the North West Province;  a health care centre supporting orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs), and HIV positive adults from Melmoth in Kwa-Zulu Natal; a community care organisation for the disabled from Bultfontein in the Free State Province; a textile manufacturing business involved in the sewing and sales of school wear from Polokwane in the Limpopo Province; a jewellery design, manufacture, repair and polishing business from Soweto, Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province; a Brickmoulding manufacturer from Ntlahantlhe in Lobatse, Botswana; and an environmental education and tourism organisation from Umhlabuyanlingana in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Province.

"Since we launched the Jet Community Awards, past winners have continued to make a difference within the communities they serve and act as both an example and an inspiration to today's community builders whose aim is to contribute to the prosperity and welfare of their communities.

Community is all about family, and as a family brand committed to making a difference in the lives of individuals, families and society at large, Jet looks forward to celebrating our, as yet, unsung 2010 heroes and rewarding their good work.” concludes Sassman.
