Two epic ways people are using the Winter Olympics to protest Russia's anti-gay laws

Have you seen today's Google Doodle

It's traditional for Google to celebrate various events with a doodle, so it's only expected that there would be one to acknowledge the start of the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Slightly less common are political statements, like the one Google has clearly made with today's doodle.

The image depicts figures of people performing various sports that will be seen at the Winter Olympics against a rainbow background. The rainbow is, of course, a recognizable emblem of gay pride.

Beneath, Google quotes the Olympic charter, which states that "the practice of sport is a human right", and that "every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind".

This doodle is a response to and criticism against Russia's anti-gay laws.

As Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin says

"Google has made a clear and unequivocal statement that Russia's anti-LGBT discrimination is indefensible".

Almost as awesome as one of the world's biggest and most recognized names taking a stand for gay rights is this fantastically homoerotic advert by Canadian group 'Canadian Institute of Diversity and Inclusion' which points out, quite accurately, the fact that the Olympics have always been "a little gay":
