When international media headlines announced that multiple states in the U.S. had decided to ban women’s access to abortions, many celebrities lent the voices to speak against restricting women’s access to this part of health care.
Some of the celebrities who have been vocal are Ava DuVernay, Rihanna, Tracee Ellis Ross, Reese Witherspoon, and even major luxury label Gucci.
But increasingly, some celebrities have taken further steps to raise funds for Planned Parenthood organisations and clinics to ensure women continue to have access to safe healthcare. Recently making their announcements of support are U.S. singer Halsey, Miley Cyrus in partnership with Marc Jacobs, and Travis Scott. What they have in common is that fashion merch is the medium through which they are generating funds from, but in very different ways.
Logo t-shirts hardly go out of fashion because really, sometimes there’s no better way to say something than by putting it on a t-shirt.
Halsey can probably attest to this after recently announcing that her t-shirts with the words “I won’t be caught dead letting a man tell me what I should do in my bed,” have raised $100 000 (about R1 400 000).
According to Halsey, the proceeds from the t-shirts will go to the Yellowhammer Fund organisation that provides funding for people seeking abortions in Alabama.
According to CNN, in May 2019 the Alabama governor signed the bill to ban abortions and imprison doctors who perform the procedure for life.
Other artists who have launched merch are Travis Scott and Miley Cyrus. After his show in Alabama, Travis Scott announced that the profits from the t-shirts sold at that show would be donated to Planned Parenthood.
Miley Cyrus, in partnership with U.S. designer Marc Jacobs, created the “Don’t f**k with my freedom” hoodie for $175 (about R2 600), where 100% of proceeds go to Planned Parenthood.
Miley has published a series of pictures on her Instagram, where she used the hashtags #WomensRightsAreHumanRights and #DONTF**KWITHMYFREEDOM in some of her posts.
According to Elle, Planned Parenthood are enthralled in battles with the different states to protect access to reproductive healthcare.
With the fight far from over, we are sure to see more influential people taking a stand.
