5 eyebrow mistakes you might be making

accreditation
For years, I have been attempting to define my eyebrow shape. Despite many compliments, I’ve realised that I’ve been over-tweezing them into a shape that doesn’t allow for naturally growth, making them appear sparse and misplaced.

Shaping your brow is often based on the shape of your face. Celebrity make-up artist, Bobbe Joy hints that it’s all about maintaining your eyebrow’s natural shape. “Whether your brow is narrow, broad or naturally angled, that’s probably right for you. You have to work with what you have,” Bobbe says.

Here are the common mistakes you may be making:

Over-tweezing

Rarely will you find a woman who doesn’t own a pair of tweezers, but many women don’t know how to tweeze correctly and most simply cannot stop themselves from a tweezing mania, that so often results in the shameful look of tadpole brows brows that are thicker on the innermost corner and taper out to a super-thin tail.

Although tweezing seems like a reasonably safe method to groom your eyebrows, overdoing it can cause follicle damage and ingrown hairs. Yikes!

Brow and make-up specialist, Rachelle Blanco told Byrdie that over-tweezing is the number one mistake women make when it comes to their brows.

Where did that arch go?

Many people misplace their brow’s arch and trying to find where it naturally lies can often feel like trying to find Wally. I, too, am guilty of misplacing my arch but I also struggle with shaping the rest of my brows around it.

You may have trouble with this too, but not to worry, here’s a great tutorial.

Your eyebrows appear to be far apart

Knowing where to start could be the most difficult part of brow grooming. Too close, and you look like you’ve got yourself a permanent frown; too far apart, and you look just plain dazed and awkward.

Keep them a thumb’s width apart and shape your brows to appear as though they are naturally coming up from the side of your nose, in a fluid-like shape.

Incorrect trimming

Some us may wish to maintain our eyebrows as well as Lily Collins, unfortunately, we sometimes deal with unruly hairs that can’t seem to fall into shape with the rest. Mine are particularly stubborn.

Trimming brows should be easy: simply brush your brows up and trim the ones that are obviously longer than the rest. Do this slowly and trim the hairs individually to avoid awkward mishaps.

At the moment we are loving these 3 brow must-haves:

Clockwise:

Pro Illuminating Tweezer Colourful Collection, available in pink, purple, yellow, green and blue at R250.00 from select Sorbet salons.

The Billion Dollar Brows Universal Eyebrow Pencil, R269, now available at Stuttafords.

Maybelline Brow Satin Eyebrow Pencil, R 109,95, Clicks.

If you’re guilty of any of these mistakes and you’re trying to revert to your brows natural shape, give your brows a full two months to grow out. Watch this video for a complete brow make-over:
