Whether they’re swooped to the side, slicked down or gelled over, your look isn’t complete unless your baby hairs are together. Try these pro tips for the perfect edges to channel influencer Kefilwe Mabote and actress Yara Shahidi.

Step 1 – Style your hair

Most people find it easier to style their edges once they’ve decided on how to wear their hair. So, whether you’re rocking a high bun, cornrows or cut, style your hair first, then lay your edges.

Step 2 – Choose your gel wisely

We all have our favourite product. But, for long-lasting hold, use gel. The best ones contain moisturising and protective ingredients such as coconut oil, keratin or vitamin E. These help to nourish and strengthen your hair while keeping it laid. Be sure to choose a gel that will work for your hair type.

Step 3 – Use the right tools for the job

Because baby hairs are fine and wispy, use a brush that will give you more control. Use a toothbrush, slim edge or an eyebrow brush to lay them down or create a swirl.

Step 4 – Use just enough gel

Applying too much gel will make your hair too gooey to work with, and then take ages to dry. Rather use just enough to cover your edges. Thereafter, slick your hair with your brush and smooth with your fingers. But, the technique may take some practice. Once done, add a little oil to prevent flaking, and keep your hair protected.

Step 5 – Wrap them up

Wrap your edges with a silk scarf until the gel dries. Doing so will keep them stretched as they dry. This means that they’ll be super sleek once you remove the wrap!
