When wigs are now getting snatched from cars at traffic lights - would you consider hair insurance?

No, this is not a joke.

Last year we wrote about wigs being grabbed at taxi ranks and busy spaces but it seems wig snatchers have graduated to grabbing wigs from cars now too.

While drivers are usually warned not to place their valuables like handbags and laptops in plain view, a new low is having to protect our latest hairstyle.

Now we might need to consider doing the same with our wigs, which when one can cost up to nearly R 15 000 here in SA (according to Bongi from Lucy's beauty salon), seems like the wise decision to make.

Ask this young Durban woman whose wig got pulled from her head while waiting for a traffic light to change. Nombeka Madida, who was sitting in traffic when the incident happened, said she didn't care much about the wig though.

“The wig is not the problem but the car and me,” Madiba said. “I don’t know what happened but my car’s sun protector is broken and my head hurts, so I need to go to the doctor soon.” she told IOL.

The incident had been recorded by fellow road user Charlene Cross's dash cam.

Twitter users Sinenhlanla posted the video on her Twitter captioned "Do not drive with windows open". See the video below.

Now before we coin this an incident to be laughed at, let's remember how traumatic this kind of crime can be and the impact on someone's mental health.

And considering how pricey they can be, looks like we're going to need wig insurance.

According to this article in IOL, you can insure your weave. "Natasha Kawulesar, head of client relations at Outsurance said that they have specialised products for several businesses that speaks directly to that business’s needs and Beauty Salons is one of them," the article notes.

"'Theft of stock is a cover that may be selected. For other clients who have personal insurance with us, they may also cover their hair pieces under our Out and About cover. This would provide them with the cover in the event of the hairpiece being stolen', said Kawulesar."

Not all insurance providers do however so check with them if they are covered under your portable possessions and would need to be specified on the policy depending on its value.
