Speaking to YOU, Summer who’s originally from Cape Town but now living it up in Los Angeles, recalls what it was like on the shoot. “Working with KKW was amazing and was truly an honour to be involved.”
The 21-year-old, who was scouted when she was only in grade 9 in 2013, revealed that Kanye West’s creative director for Yeezy, Kim Schraub, also directed the KKW Fire Collection shoot.

“Elias Tahan was the videographer for the project and Rokael Lizama was on makeup, both artists I have worked with before and adore. It always warms my heart to see familiar faces on set.”
What also stood out the most to the Instagram influencer and fashion blogger was how well the KKW beauty team treated their models.
“They take extremely great care of their girls from the nail team to the food on set – which is sometimes my favourite part even though I am slightly embarrassed to admit it!”
While she’s worked with artists like Val Garland, Ismaya French and Beyoncé’s makeup artist, Rokael Liazma, as well as internationally renowned brands such as Cosmopolitan, it hasn’t always been a walk in the park for Summer.
“Of course, you will never be every individual's cup of tea. As a POC (person of colour) and considering the fact that the beauty industry has been dominated largely by 'European' standards of beauty, it is inevitable that your look will be met with apprehension.”
But realising the importance of self-worth and confidence has helped her rise above the challenges she’s encountered.
For anyone looking to get into the beauty industry, Summer emphasises the importance of educating oneself.
