  • This Paris Haute Couture Week (6 - 8 July), top designers experimented with online showcases, as the coronavirus crisis continues to put gatherings on hold indefinitely.
  • Chanel was one of the fashion houses on this virtual lineup, presenting its Fall-Winter 2020/21 Haute Couture collection by creative director Virginie Viard.
  • We go backstage with Chanel's head of beauty, Lucia Pica, to take a retrospective look at the makeup notes from the show.

This month's Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode's digital fashion week has been received with mixed feelings. Some appreciated the fact that it was testament to the old adage "necessity is the mother of invention", as creative directors actioned their titles through new digital mediums. On the other hand, some remain ambivalent about the new approach, expressing that 'video week' has not been satisfying.

Alas, the show had to go on... the same way Chanel adjusted to a world without Karl Lagerfeld at the helm of the fashion house. But Chanel continues to stitch in Karl's legacy in new collections, as Fashionista notes; "creative director Virginia Viard said that [for this collection], she drew from her predecessor and longtime boss, Karl Lagerfeld, to design big, bold retro looks accented by big, bold jewellery — all inspired by the late designer's social life."

"I was thinking about a punk princess coming out of Le Palace at dawn. With a taffeta dress, big hair, feathers and lots of jewelry," she wrote in the notes accompanying the 30-look lineup. "This collection is more inspired by Karl Lagerfeld than Gabrielle Chanel. Karl would go to Le Palace, he would accompany these very sophisticated and very dressed up women, who were very eccentric too."

Of course, every showcase of garments is accompanied by makeup that completes the visual story told on the runway. For this, Chanel has Lucia Pica, their head of beauty. She shared her makeup notes with us, saying that for the Fall-Winter 2020/21 Haute Couture collection, her vision was "romantic punk with a sophisticated twist. A playfulness paired with a chic sense of assurance".

"We maintained a punk attitude to the makeup, going from a bold eyeliner to a deep dark sophisticated lip, through a defined yet subtle use of pink," Lucia adds.

The head of beauty further details her makeup notes as follows;

"Very strong and deep, defined browny red lips, a very thin elongated eyeliner going across the top of the eye, a very transparent and luminous skin with accents of balmy highlight on the top of the lid and high on the cheekbones give yet another twist to the same inspiration."
