When it comes to Hollywood stars, we’d be willing to believe almost anything about them.
But even we were a little shocked to hear the lengths celebs go to for that perfect red-carpet look. Weird beauty hacks include everything from Coca-Cola to cat litter.
We take a closer look at the strange that is Tinseltown.
1. Glue
You’ve probably heard the expression “eyebrows on fleek”. Beyoncé’s eyebrows always are. Her makeup artist, Sir John, has revealed the secret: he uses a glue stick instead of eyebrow gel to tame those brows.
2. Kitty litter
Yup, you heard it here first. Of all the everyday products you could use to exfoliate your skin – just think coffee granules, oatmeal or sugar – Jersey Shore’s Snooki uses (clean) kitty litter. Maybe she thinks she’s the cat’s whiskers.
3. Haemorrhoid cream
As if the cat’s toilet wasn’t enough, it turns out some stars dab haemorrhoid cream around their eyes. Reality star Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, has famously said he uses the cream to hide fine lines around her eyes before applying makeup. The cream apparently works a treat to firm the skin and diminish the appearance of wrinkles.
4. Toothpaste
This hack you might know. Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt has a thrifty, efficient way of dealing with spots and blemishes: toothpaste. Not only good for cleaning teeth, this everyday product is said to dry out pimples and help lighten dark blemishes on the skin.
5. Mayonnaise
Actress Salma Hayek’s luscious dark locks are famous in Hollywood. Only, she doesn’t use expensive products to keep her hair shiny. Yup, the actress uses good old mayonnaise as a hair mask.
And this isn’t some wacky celebrity whim, either. According to website Huda Beauty, mayonnaise contains ingredients such as lemon, eggs and vinegar that help keep tresses shiny.
6. Apple cider vinegar
Actress Scarlett Johansson is convinced a daily dose of apple cider vinegar brightens and clears the skin. But she doesn’t drink it – she uses it as a facial cleanser. Who’d have thought?
7. Tomato sauce
If you’ve ever tried it, you might know that home dyeing can be a rather messy affair, and the results aren’t always great. But actress Sienna Miller has found a flop-proof method of getting rid of unwanted dye. In an interview with Vogue UK, Sienna, a natural blonde, revealed how she’d tried to dye her hair red with henna when she was 22, but it came out pink. And when she tried dyeing it brown, it came out green. She’d struggled to get her hair back to normal – until she covered her hair in tomato sauce every night for a year. And just like that, she’d hit the reset button on her hair colour.
8. Sticky tape
Lady Gaga, a legend on the red carpet, doesn’t use expensive makeup remover at the end of the night. Her solution is simple: sticky tape. Stick the tape over the makeup you’re taking off, rip it off – and voilà! The makeup stays behind on the tape.
9. Cranberry juice
Though Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman has been blonde for a long time, she’s also known for her red hair. But how to maintain the perfect shade of red when dyeing your hair? Rinse it with cranberry juice, that’s how, according to Huda Beauty. The juice reportedly locks in the colour for longer.
10. Coca-cola
British model and actress Suki Waterhouse seems to have perfected the freshly tousled look. How does she do it, though?
“I don’t like my hair when it’s washed – it’s fine and limp – but Coca-Cola makes it tousled, like I've gone through the Amazon or something,” Suki told US Weekly in 2015.
We’re not sure any of these beauty hacks will catch on a big way. But at least we’re sure of one thing now: even the brightest stars are only human.
