Should you be using eye cream in your 20s?

accreditation

If you’re under 25, chances are you always pass the eye cream section of the beauty aisle.

As a millennial, I know wrapping my mind around working an anti-aging product into my routine seems a little premature, and with so many misconceptions surrounding skin care, it all gets a bit confusing.

Vogue.au explains that researchers at Kagoshima University and Jichi Medical University in Japan found that the eye area has less oil secreting glands than the rest of your face. The rest of your face produces more natural oil, which keeps it wrinkle-free for longer.

And Dr. Neal Schultz, a dermatologist at DermTV.com, says that issues that occur in the eye area (e.g. dryness, flakiness, swelling, etc.) can occur as early as age 17 because the skin around the eyes is fragile and prone to dryness.

This area is also quicker to show aging and fatigue as the constant movement around this area accelerates the appearance of wrinkles.

Yet the jury is still out among dermatologists when it comes to whether or not twenty-somethings should introduce an eye cream (for anti-aging purposes) into their skin routines, but it does have many other benefits.

It also serves as a skin protector against dark circles, puffiness or dryness. And applying an eye cream containing an SPF will shield your delicate eye area against harmful UVA and UVB rays - one of the main factors that accelerate aging.

...keep your eye cream in the fridge.

What type of eye cream should you use?

Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, the area around your eyes may be more likely to flake. It's advisable to use a cream that is thicker to hydrate the skin.

Nuxe Nirvanesque Smoothing Eye Contour Cream, R330. This eye contour treatment with poppy root and hyaluronic acid instantly plumps up and hydrates the skin around the eyes.

Oily skin

People with oily skin tend to have puffy eyes and dark circles. Opt for a product containing retinol to diminish the appearance of puffiness and dark circles.

Try the Dermalogica Age Smart Reversal Eye Complex, R990, which contains retinol.

Wrinkles around your eyes

Look for products with peptides, vitamin C and retinol.

Try the Skinderm anti-ageing eye + lip concentrate, R320 (exclusive to Perfect 10).

How to apply the product

Livemore warns us to never rub the eye area as it’s so delicate. Instead, dab the cream on with your ring finger using circular motions.

Also, keep your eye cream in the fridge. This will help refresh your eyes and reduce puffiness even more.

Now that you’ve got all the valuable information on your skincare, swap that concealer you use as a quick fix for a more long term solution.
