Taking to her Instagram page to share a selfie of her blood covered face, reality star Zodwa revealed to her fans that she had undergone the beauty treatment to rejuvenate her facial skin. The vampire facial uses platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy, to inject your own blood that’s been drawn from your arm back into your face using microscopic needles.

This is all you need to know about the facial.

This beauty medical procedure rose to prominence in 2013 after reality star Kim Kardashian-West went for the treatment and left many of her fans curious.

The procedure which according to Dr Fatima Bhabha from the aesthetics practice Beauty & Curves helps reduce fine lines in the skin, acne scarring, wrinkles and keeps the skin rejuvenated – has been tried by the likes of local celebrities such as presenter Bonnie Mbuli and DJ Zinhle.

Health and Wellness suggests that this cosmic procedure is a suitable alternative for people who are afraid of going under the knife for plastic surgery.  It is also safe because the person’s blood is reinjected using PRP therapy.

The trendy skincare treatment which is aimed at promoting cell renewal, could potentially pose the risk of infections. According to Vox, the procedure could possibly spread blood-borne infections such as HIV and hepatitis B and C to the client, if needless aren’t sterilized correctly.
