The wonder of water

accreditation
Create energy
  • Use a toning body scrub or dry-skin brush for 5 minutes before you step under the shower or into the bath. Your skin will tingle from your invigorated circulation and, over time, it will greatly improve the appearance of problem areas.

  • The water temperature of your bath or shower should be a maximum of 34°C or cooler for an invigorating effect. Start off with a warm bath and slowly decrease the temperature – you'll be surprised at how cool you can go. If you shower, turn down the warm water just before you step out for an immediate energy boost.

  • Sprinkle six drops of energising pine, lemon, rosemary or mint essential oil in the shower tray before you turn on the shower. The heat of the water will vaporise the fragrance.

  • Mix six drops of energising essential oils with one cup of Epsom salts. Add this to your bath to restore flagging energy levels before a night out.

    Create sensuality

  • Ylang-ylang is a lovely scent but it can be cloying. Combine it with a citrus or lavender oil to make it less overpowering. Blend two drops of ylang-ylang essential oil, one of lavender and one of bergamot in a diffuser for a subtle sensual fragrance.

  • Place a handful of fresh rose petals in a muslin bag and hang it under running water to release the delicate fragrance. Then use the bath bag as a wash cloth or let it float in the bath while you relax.

  • Orange blossom, or neroli, has a bitter-sweet fragrance that is totally different from the citrus scent of the fruit, and it's said to be an aphrodisiac. Mix eight drops of neroli oil with 250ml distilled water and shake vigorously. Spray on your skin after a bath or shower, or on wet hair.

  • Touch is an essential part of sensuality. Invest in supersoft bath sheets; scratchy towels just won't do.

    Create tranquillity

  • Light a candle rather than switching on bright lights in the bathroom. Place a lavender compress over your eyes for a few minutes to soothe the eye area and ease facial tension.

  • A bath pillow can make the difference between a comfortable soak and a functional dip. Place it high enough so that the top edge supports your neck.

  • Lie with your ears under the water and listen to the rhythm of your breathing. Water amplifies the sound of your breath and dulls outside noise. Breathe in to the count of eight and out to the count of 16.

  • Once your bath is run, add six drops of relaxing essential oil to the water – lavender, geranium and camomile are all known for their relaxing effects. Swish through the water with your fingers to disperse the oil.
