Weave Essentials

While walking  to and from work daily, my eyes can’t help but wonder to the people around me.Being a bit of a diva myself, I’m particularly fascinated by their clothes, their shoes, their make-up and, well, their hair.

So one morning, amongst the cute bobs, Brazilians and shaven heads, there comes this thick, tired, hideously out of place mop of fake hair that without a doubt, causes me to do a double-take. Generally, I do not judge. I love weaves. But,  like most things, there’s a right way and – YES – a wrong way.

Go to an actual hairdresser

I’m serious. Good, qualified hairdressers will firstly make sure that they understand exactly what it is you want done with your hair, find a way to make it work for your face and finally, they will have the expertise and experience to actually put it in right.

I’ve walked out of several hair salons, teary eyed because the hairdresser didn’t know what  she was doing (go figure), and that has in turn made me the most demanding ,meticulous and straight-forward customer you’ll find.

Expect to pay

Getting a weave isn’t cheap - you can expect to pay a few hundreds. Don’t let this put you off. If you can afford it, then consider it an investment, because a good weave can hold for ages and still look fantastic!

Trust me, I’ve seen ‘cheap hair’ walking around. The kind that when you shake your head or when the wind blows, it does not move...

Choose human hair

The synthetic kind may be easier on your pocket, but take it from me – after a week or so, they start looking like steel wool. And you can’t use heat on them either, because the fibres literally melt away. And have you ever smelt burnt plastic? That stench will haunt you... and everyone around you too!

And that’s the basics, I think.
