When Madison O’Neill asked for a date to a wedding on Twitter, she could have never imagined that she would find her true love.

The young woman from Iowa in the US had just had her heart broken by a former boyfriend when she realized that she had RSVP’d for a wedding with a plus 1, reported Buzzfeed.

"Once we broke up, I realized I was dateless and I didn't really want to go alone," she said.

The 20-year-old then decided she would just post on Twitter and see if anyone wanted to be her plus one for the wedding.

“I figured if anyone responded it would be a close friend that would come with me just for fun,” she told Buzzfeed.

She optimistically posted on her Twitter page in 2015 and wrote, “So hmu if you wanna be my date to a wedding tomorrow,”

Her schoolmate Charlie Dohrmann – whom she hardly knew – quickly replied to her request via direct message and said he would go with her.

Little did Madison’s know that Charlie had seen her at their school, and he’d taken an interest in her but had always been too scared to approach her.

He saw the tweet as an opportunity and decided it was his chance to go for it.

“I remembered her from high school and I knew she was really cute,” he told Mashable.

“I called in sick for work because she’d already told me all the info for when the wedding was and I wasn’t about to miss it!”

Although Madison admitted that she was a little hesitant at first, she soon got over it and decided that it wouldn’t be that bad.

“I ended up saying yes because I figured that having one awkward date wouldn’t be the end of the world, and I might as well go for it,” she told Buzzfeed.

Two and a half years later the couple are still together and Charlie recently popped the question – to Madison’s surprise.

Charlie told Mashable how he proposed to his Twitter sweetheart.

“I took her to the Coronado Bridge on the island side and she set up a tripod so we could take pictures together,” he explained.

“After she hit the timer on her camera I told her we should try a new pose and that’s when I got on one knee and asked her to marry me.”

Now engaged, the couple shared their old tweets for all to see how their story unfolded.

Twitter users were ecstatic about the love story and immediately responded – in true Twitter fashion – with memes fit for the occasion.
