This past year was the year of celebrity and royal weddings, putting bridal couture in the spotlight for all of us to marvel at. Some of our favourite famous brides went the traditional route in simple, yet elegant wedding gowns and cascading veils, while others opted for more understated or unconventional wedding looks, including suits.

Floral appliqué, mermaid silhouettes and oodles of tulle maintained their reign as the Holy Matrimony Trinity, but not without tweaks and modern adaptations here and there to set each wedding dress apart from the rest.

Here are ten wedding looks we found worth writing home about:

Royal gowns

Would this even be a "memorable wedding gowns" list without the mention of Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie's wedding dresses? The royal family gave us double the matrimonial jubilance in 2018, giving brides-to-be at least two more dresses to add to their Pinterest boards.

Meghan Markle

The Duchess of Sussex walked down the aisle in a minimal Givenchy gown by Clare Waight Keller. No frills, no lace and no embellishments - just silk.

Meghan Markle's Stella McCartney halterneck wedding reception gown was a personal favourite - still simple, but undeniably timeless.

Princess Eugenie

Princess Eugenie's gown was a bit more intricately designed. This modern royal bride wore a ballgown with a deep V-neckline by British designers Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos

The talking point of Eugenie's bridal look was the fact that she ditched a veil to show off her remarkable tiara.

Regal & traditional

Traditional Indian weddings are never anything less than spectacular. Same goes for the brides' wedding attire. This is why Bollywood actress' Deepika Padukone stood out to us as a one of 2018's dazzling brides.

Deepika Padukone

First, Padukone gave us that pink Mohammed Ashi gown moment on the Cannes red carpet. Yes, the same one Beyoncé later wore at the Global Citizen Festival in December.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas' wedding has been setting social media abuzz since 1 December 2018, making it a topic of discussion as long as her wedding train.

There's absolutely no denying that this actress may have just set a new standard for bridal extravagance and we're here for it.

Siyanda Bani

Bringing it back home to South Africa, one of our own local beauties got hitched at the end of 2018 in a traditional ceremony in the Eastern Cape.

The brand strategist's predominantly black wedding ensemble made a memorable rule-breaking statement.

The dreamy gown

Chanel Iman

Victoria's Secret model Chanel Iman Shepard tied the knot with New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard last year in a dreamy setup that was somewhat reminiscent of Kimye's big day, thanks to the roses.

Her dusty pink Zuhair Murad gown is a family heirloom worthy.

Rose Leslie

For once Game of Thrones fans were not sitting on the edge of their seats in bated breath due to an action-packed scene. Instead, when the show's co-stars Rose Leslie and Kit Harington GoT hitched, fans couldn't help but celebrate the confetti-filled romantic ceremony that ended at the bride's family's castle.

Miley Cyrus

After nearly 10 years of dating on and off, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth finally got their happily ever after. We can't tell much about Miley's dress from the pictures she shared of her surprise wedding, but doesn't this just look beyond dreamy?

Beautifully understated

Sometimes you don't have to go OTT on your big day to be an unforgettable bride. Model/actress Emily Ratajkowski and local creative/meditation practitioner Itumeleng Baloyi are proof of this.

Emrata confirmed her nuptials in a mustard yellow $200 (roughly R2800) Zara suit, saying she chose not to wear white to her wedding because she's "a woman with a lot of character and experience".
