- This week, the grand Italian fashion house of Valentino presented its haute couture show via livestream.
- Pierpaolo Piccioli is yet another creative director who has taken advantage of the current industry climate's need and appetite for out-the-box presentations with a mini film, titled “Of Grace and Light”.
- Pierpaolo took the show to another level, as models were suspended from the ceiling regally dressed in cascading dreamy, seraphic gowns from the all-white Fall 2020 collection.
Spectacular, spectacular! After months of a "famine of beauty", the fashion industry is gaining strength again as designers and creative directors give us a taste of couture divinity one digital show at a time. The Valentino digital showcase, in particular, has taken our breath away and breathed it into a haute couture body that was becoming dull, lifeless and unimaginative.
Pierpaolo Piccioli's 11-minute fashion film was shot in the famed Cinecittà Studios in collaboration with photographer Nick Knight, who was one of the 2019 honourees on Business of Fashion's prestigious BoF 500 list.
I'm still too consumed (two days later) by awe to give a coherent and unbiased description of this film, so I'll borrow Harper's Bazaar's neat and eloquent words which note the following;
"From a larger-than-life cape made of panels of effervescent feathers over a sequined bodysuit to a gown with layers of ruffles to frocks in crêpe de chine that feature portrait necklines, voluminous shoulders, or frilly collars, every look conveys an angelic quality—which is further punctuated by the fact that it is an all-white collection."

Complete with a beautifully chilling sonic backdrop by FKA Twigs, it's a collection showcase that triggers all the senses - exactly what haute couture was created for. As such, we will not miss the opportunity to be on the nose (unashamedly so) at the sight of white gowns by giving you a taste of bridal inspiration courtesy of Pierpaolo Piccioli's feathered, ruffled, and crêpe textures.

The princess bride
This bride has probably been planning her wedding meticulously since the day they got engaged. A bride-to-be that's ready with archival references of all the royal weddings and the kind of bride that will most likely go for something classic and traditional without taking too many risks. The perfectionist first born daughter who is setting the standard for her siblings and marrying her long-term partner who is at the top of the ladder in their field.
The practical DIY bride
A resourceful bride who wants a dress she can probably wear to another special occasion in the future. This bride's mom will most likely sew the bridesmaids dresses herself, but that won't compromise the sartorial outcome for the people in the bridal party. This is also the middle child, who's been conditioned to save money and be considerate of their other sibling throughout their life and is now marrying a socially safe (boring maybe), yet financially secure 9-5 partner.
The runway bride
This bride loves making a statement whether in lounge wear, a suit or a cocktail dress. They find bridal boutiques too predictable and would much rather reference haute couture or avant garde options for their dress design. More importantly, she won't care if you like her wedding gown or not. The last born who'll break the budget if it means her gown will go down in bridal fashion history and is okay with rebelling from her family yet again by not sticking entirely to the white gown rule. I mean, she's marrying a digital savvy tech startup founder, whose job doesn't really make sense to her parents (and most people) but they're just happy it affords them trips abroad twice a year.

The on-trend bride
If she's seen it on Instagram, she'll co-sign it. With a keen eye for all things pretty and particularly feminine, this bride doesn't necessarily set trends, but when she's seen enough people rocking a trend, she's happy to adopt it. Her fiance was most likely a sports jock in school, now works at Investec and tees off at 7am on Saturdays. She only has sisters as siblings, who'll also be her bridesmaids.
