We all know how expensive a wedding can be. Asking for financial assistance from friends and family may seem ideal, until you tell them how much the donations amounted to, that the wedding is cancelled, and what you are planning to do with their money - everything but the wedding.
This Reddit bride took to Facebook to announce that her wedding which was scheduled for December is cancelled and thanked her friends and family for the donations that amounted to $30 000 (about R442 000). Instead of returning the money, she announced that she and her husband-to-be, only known as Edward, will be going on a honeymoon with the money - before they get married.
She then took the opportunity to say that she would be communicating a new date for the wedding. “Don’t worry, the money you’ve donated will not be spent in vain but rather used towards a honeymoon in the coming months. After we regain financial stability... we will announce a new wedding date and reopen our money fund for any further gifts,” she said.

The bride mentioned that she and Edward feel “blessed” to have some generous friends, and the money would help “offset” honeymoon costs while helping to “scale an even better future wedding.” The bride continued to say, “In the meantime, I’ll be updating our gift fund registry on Amazon if anyone would like to gift us something to take on honeymoon.” Her family and friends were not happy about the announcement and felt betrayed by the bride.

The bride’s friend - “In all seriousness, is the wedding really cancelled? I’ve already gotten the time off work for Dec 1 which is less than a month away.”
The bride’s aunt – “On that thought, I would like my $3,500 (R51 800) donation returned and will not be attending the new wedding event. Please return my money in full.”
The bride’s uncle – “You are not answering my calls or responding to my texts so I’m just going to tell you: You are to return my more than generous $12,000 (R177 601) donation.”

In response to all the disappointment expressed by her family and friends the bride said her name was tarnished as the post made it to Reddit, and as a result she needed a “week off life”. She shared that she was feeling light-headed and had to rush to the hospital. The medical bill for this amounted to $2,000 (R29 571), she says.
The bride went on to add that individuals must “please consider donating any spa or personal care items," and they “would like more affluent members of the family to consider donations as a courtesy”.
Reddit users took no time to express how they felt about the bride, with one user saying, “I'm actually speechless. Spending 30k on a honeymoon for a wedding that got cancelled? Wooooow.”
Another added, “’After we regain financial stability’ .... how did 30k not do that and you can still afford a honeymoon? No one is coming to your wedding, honey.”
