This bride and groom were just going about their wedding day business on 23 February when they brought South Africans the most joy following their detour to buy a snack in between their photoshoot and their wedding reception.

After a “jumping shot” and a “running shot” outside the UCT Jammie stairs on the hot Saturday afternoon, the couple’s driver offered to take them to a shop to get some water before they made their way to their wedding reception.

It was at the Rondebosch Pick n Pay aisle where the newlyweds were photographed still in their wedding outfits. They ended up buying bottled water and a packet of chips.

The bride was captured in her white wedding dress smiling in the sweets and chips aisle with a packet of chips in her hands, while her husband – in a silver grey suit – was in the distance deliberating his choice of chips.

The bride, Zaakiyah Achmat, says they were greeted by stares as they walking into the store when eventually a man approached them and asked to take a picture.

“I didn’t think this was going to be such a big deal,” says the 21-year-old bride. She describes herself as private person and was surprised when her cousins sent her screenshots of a picture of them of Twitter.

A short while after, Pick n Pay, who was tagged in the post, asked Twitter users to help them find the happy couple to send them a wedding gift and all hands were on deck on the social media platform.

“Since they chose to spend some of their special day with us, we thought it was a wonderful opportunity to give them a nice surprise to help them celebrate,” says Pick n Pay spokesperson Janine Caradonna.

This wedding celebration was definitely a communal affair, even beyond Twitter. Zaakiyah says her cousin took their wedding pictures and their other family members chimed in to assist in different ways.

“We were so fortunate to have so much help from our family, everyone wanted to help and pitch in… It was lovely,” says the newlywed.

Still taking in all the newfound attention, she says: “I don’t have a lot of friends, I’m usually like a wallflower and to know that people are celebrating me and my husband… I don’t know how to feel about it except for wow.”
