Lindsay Richardson (30) and her fiancé, Liam Sharpe (27), from the UK, were “gutted” when they were forced to cancel their wedding due to the coronavirus outbreak. But the pair made the best out of a bad situation by having a virtual celebration.

“We decided to postpone our wedding a week before lockdown as the rules at the time stated only five guests were allowed to attend,” Lindsay said.

“We’d invited 250 people for our big day and didn’t want to risk any of them not being able to come so it was lucky that we’d made that decision.”

Liam’s dad, Mark (47), and step mom, Nicole (38), then suggested that the couple host a pretend wedding photoshoot using props from their van.

The “fake” wedding took place on 24 April which was the same day they were initially supposed to get married.

“Liam had a tux that he’d previously worn to a wedding, and I ordered a last-minute white dress online for £40 (R900) with next-day delivery,” Lindsay revealed.

“Our Chihuahua cross pug Pablo is our baby and we do everything with him so it was great to involve him.”

Luckily, Lindsay already had a suit for Pablo that was perfect for the occasion. “So Pablo acted as Liam’s best man and was waiting for me at the altar,” she added.

The virtual wedding was recorded on mobile phones and streamed using a broadcasting suite called StreamYard from their garden.

“The live stream was controlled by my friend's laptop, which brought in a singer, violinist and photographer,” she said. They also had a “pretend vicar” who said the vows.

“It was incredible - there was a violinist playing as I walked through the blossom trees in our garden and a singer after the ceremony,” said Lindsay.

Neighbours watched the couple’s ceremony out of their windows, which made them feel “even more nervous” she confessed.

“I think I was more nervous about the virtual wedding than I’ll be on the real big day in September because I’ll have my friends and family there with me to give me pep talks! It was so nice to make memories with our nearest and dearest watching.”

The couple then had a small braai, and Liam threw Lindsay into the hot tub in celebration of their special day.
