BAFTA attendees were urged to wear sustainable outfits, but only a few reduced their carbon footprint on this red carpet

Stars flooded the red carpet at the 2020 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) ceremony on Sunday 2 February, where they were encouraged to either wear dresses and suits that were already part of their wardrobes, purchased from resellers or environmentally friendly designers or had been hired for the night, as the event tries to become more carbon neutral.

Before the ceremony, BAFTA reportedly sent out a sustainable fashion guide, which was put together by the London College of Fashion, to all attendees.

The guide encouraged those in attendance to make use of rental fashion sites or source clothing from resale outlets. If the stars really wanted something new to wear, the guide suggested several sustainable brands such as Stella McCartney and Reformation, both of which are renowned for using innovative eco-friendly materials.

"This awards season, BAFTA are doing more than ever before to consider sustainability across its awards ceremonies, including inviting guests to 'dress sustainably'," the guide stated.

"To help navigate some of the issues around fashion and sustainability, the London College of Fashion and UAL are supporting BAFTA with more information on how you can dress sustainably," it added.

While not all the stars in attendance necessarily flexed their sustainable fashion muscle, they sure did flex in other ways, while sticking to their regular red carpet routines.

We take a look at 11 of the most memorable looks below:

Ella Balinska

In a Giambattista Valli Couture gown from the Autumn/Winter '19 collection. The Charlie's Angels star could've opted for strappy stilettos in a colour that compliments the dress, though.

Jodie Turner-Smith

The Queen and Slim star opted out of the call to wear sustainable fashion, and showed up in a custom Gucci gown by Alessandro Michele.

Emilia Clarke

Also ignoring the memo was Emilia Clarke, who stunned in a Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown.

Zoë Kravitz

In gold Saint Laurent. She's the face of Saint Laurent and she does thrift shopping every now and then, so we'll allow it.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

Well-known for repeating some of her best looks, this was an easy rule for Kate Middleton to abide by. And this Alexander McQueen gown is one well worth wearing over and over again.

Karla-Simone Spence

In black and gold Monique Lhuillier. The updo is a perfect juxtaposition to the cascading cape.

Olivia Colman

In embroidered Alexander McQueen and she completed the look by accessorising with Atelier Swarovski’s lab-grown pink diamonds, acknowledging the call to go green.

Daisy Ridley

Another thoughtful eco-friendly look, as Daisy's Oscar de la Renta gown was made with sustainability sourced fabric.

Lulu Wang

We'd like to believe that Simone Rocha was one of the recommended sustainable fashion brands, as it's a brand known for upcyclying their leftover fabrics.

Rooney Mara

In a knockout black Givenchy Spring/Summer '20 gown with semi-sheer panels. Should we give the star a pass by virtue of the fact that this collection featured sustainable denim pieces?

Kaitlyn Dever

Styled by one of Hollywood's leading celebrity stylists, Karla Welch, Kaitlyn Dever stunned yet again. This time, in Miu Miu.
