Hair colouring tips

Colouring your hair at home might sound like a risky thing to do, but it can save you a lot of money.

And you’ll have great hair colour without having to wait till your next hair appointment.

Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Find the right shade

Always check the box to see what colour your hair will be if you use the dye. If your natural hair is dark it is most likely that your desired hair colour won’t come out as strong.

Beauty houses like L’oreal and Revlon help customers find the right colour through an online questionnaire.

Keep it simple

Make sure that all you want to do is change your hair colour or simply cover up gray hair.

Complicated procedures such as highlights and treating damaged hair require the experience of a hair stylist.

Make sure your hair isn’t wet

Experts usually suggest that you don’t wet or wash your hair for at least 24-48 hours prior to the dyeing process.

Applying the dye on hair that has had prior contact with water can result in hair and scalp damage.

To keep from your skin getting coloured, apply Vaseline to the outline of your hair, this includes your ears, nape of your neck and hairline.

Test it

Whatever brand you choose make sure you do a skin and strand test. Your skin might have an allergic reaction to the dye. Read the leaflet in your dye packaging and follow the instructions on how you can test it.

Applying Colour

It’s important to familiarise yourself with the product that you will be using, read the instructions carefully and follow each step as indicated to get proper results.

The suggested waiting time for your dye to process is about 30-45 minutes, depending how strong you want your colour to come out. It is best to wait the maximum time limit for dark and gray hair.

Once you have rinsed and used after care conditioner on your hair you can now blow dry and style as desired.
