The fashion line includes dolls and accessories under the brands Super Shabba and Princess Bokang.

“We’ve always wanted to start the business. But I’d like to say our biggest inspiration was when we found out we were going to have a son. And the first thing we thought is ‘what he is going to wear? And what’s out there right doesn’t represent African kids,” says Bokang about the inspiration behind the clothing line.

The pair collaborated on design of the merchandise, Bokang says. “Siphiwe was literally involved in each and every single step, from the kind of material we chose to the graphics that were chosen. He’s a very involved person and very creative as well. Most times we find ourselves stuck with ideas and he comes up with some of the most brilliant ideas. So he’s been there from the beginning.”

Bokang stressed during the interview that it’s important for the African child to wear clothes that define who they are, adding that their vision is to create a range of local heroes that a South African child can relate to.

“Even for little boys, I say all these super heroes that are out there on the market, the moment they take off the mask they don’t look like you. So basically we felt that the gap is there. We want to inspire the African child, we want them to know they can be great and that they are worthy.”

The clothes are available on www.sbkids.co.za and will also be sold at Mamma Magic from 1 to 3 December 2017.
