Stylish women in science – these are our favourite looks

Style and beauty is not what immediately comes to mind when we think of people who work in science fields or work.

In the spirit of breaking stereotypes, social media user Maya Degrood started a thread of stylish scientists. Maya has shared she obtained a BSc in Biochemistry degree and encouraged her fellow science social media users to share their stylish moments.

The sentiments ‘I am not my job’ comes up when people industries known as STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) industries choose to express themselves through fashion and beauty. The thread is celebratory and emphasises a point once raised by South African cardiologist Dr Viwe Mtwesi, “Stop stereotyping ... that needs to end”.

It is incredibly unfortunate that Dr Viwe went through a tsunami of unwarranted backlash for the way she dresses while off duty. And in a spirit of smashing the stereotypes a la Maya Degrood, we’ve compiled a short list of stylish South African professional who work in science fields.
