“As brand David Tlale we wanted to change the status quo.
"To say we can build brands that are made in South Africa and made with excellence,” he said, at the students’ showcase in Maboneng, Joburg, on Friday.
The Intern by David Tlale is in its third year and for 12 months Tlale takes them through the paces of being a fashion designer.
This year nine students from Gauteng showcased their work under the theme May Day and June 16. The fashion interns were challenged to use georgette material for their pieces.
The few hundred guests saw a few models donned in yellow rubber gloves, while some held buckets and hammers to represent Worker’s Day. For Youth Day, models carried backpacks and books while other designs represented police uniform.
ANC and SACP logos could be seen in a few designs, with one garment having the words “vote ANC” across the shoulder.
The interns will go through more challenges to determine who will showcase at Joburg Fashion Week in August, Durban Fashion Fair and Lagos Design Week. The main prize will be a one year post as Tlale’s assistant designer. The winner will also be assisted in setting up a studio with machinery and computers.
“The journey is to see The Intern by David Tlale become a reality show that will showcase how to become a brand. It will show that there is more to fashion than taking a bow at the end of the show,” Tlale said.
