Who has the best white blouse - Cape Town or Joburg?

accreditation

White blouses have always been that essential item mentioned when we talk capsule collection or investing in the classics.

But we're not talking about the ‘workwear for women’ white shirt with black pants/skirt outfit a la stock photo below.

Last year we saw a massive surge in indie designers creating beautifully crafted one of a kind white blouses and shirts that left us all pinning and pining for the perfect one on the Gram.

Take a look at these ones from Sisi The Collection.

This classic has been given a new fun side to its personality – to wear over a bikini, with jean cutoffs or even to a swanky work event. It’s versatile AF and we are crushing hard.

My editor challenged me to a shop or hunt adventure, to see who could find the ultimate white blouse. I searched in Cape Town and she roamed the streets of Joburg.

Cape Town

I pitted a H&M white shirt, R529 vs. one from local designer Margot Molyneux, R780.

Styled in a different way than what I would usually wear, I had fun tying them in the front and sort of off-the-one-shoulder with a black bra showing. With that, the rebirth of the white shirt as an everyday staple is established.

I loved both shirts yet with such a small difference in price I would definitely go for the Molyneux. The fabric is linen and will last you so much longer.

The H&M option is a fast-fashion buy that will look fantastic for one season, but the Molyneux will last you for seasons to come. So it’s all really about your priorities.

Joburg

First up, Hannah Lavery. You can shop her 100% linen wrap top at Convoy in Melville for R820.

You can tie it in so many ways. Wear it with a plunging neckline and tie at the waist in the front, side or back. Try it on the other way around to show off your back. You can play with other twists and wraps.

Next, Mareth Colleen's white shirt dress (okay it's not technically a top but hear me out) for R799 also from Convoy makes a very versatile item. You can wear it as a dress or leave unbuttoned as a throw over a bikini or crop top and shorts.

I'm a huge fan of Superella (across the road from Convoy) and love how she dresses her storefront. The top is R650 and the pini is R1000.

Just take a look at her collection. Tops priced from R550 to R700 and the jacket is R800. Well-constructed, Ella Buter's clothing will last a lifetime. I have a few pieces from her already.

This bib is R600.
