Rihanna releases Fenty X Puma's Spring/Summer 2017 collection

This collection is a mash-up of 18th century French Rococo and neoclassical flair with athletic street styling. Extravagant fabrics are used with intricate ruffles and pleating, corsets galore, playful bows and gender-bending silhouettes in a delicate colour palette of blush, mint green, lavender, pink and white.

Rihanna kicks off this collection in stores with the return of her most popular item in the collaboration – the Fenty slides. This time, they’re back with a silky bow strap in lieu of fur. And instead of her award-winning creepers (they won Footwear News Shoe of the Year in 2016), new army-green sneakers make an appearance, featuring silk bows and zips instead of standard laces. The pieces come in shades of bubblegum pink or camouflage green.

The footwear launched in stores around the world on Thursday, three days after the singer-turned-designer showed her Autumn 2017 collection at Paris Fashion Week.

Puma’s sporty style comes through as traditional tracksuits, boxing robes, tennis dresses, polo shirts and iconic footwear silhouettes are reimagined by Rihanna.

“It’s as if Marie Antoinette went to the gym!” she says. “I’m thrilled to finally see the collection out there. It was such a fun and rewarding experience to create ... as was seeing it come alive on the runway and in our campaign. Now I can’t wait for everyone to wear them their own way – mix and match, and represent their Fenty X Puma favourites in their everyday style.”

The singer plays with exaggerated and oversized shapes, and contrasts soft hues with hard-edged, street looks. If you can’t get your hands on the new sneakers or a pair of slides, don’t fret: more pieces from the spring collection will release every month until June.

The Fenty X Puma Bow Sneaker (R2 499) and Bow Slide (R1 299) are available locally at Puma Select, Bree Street, Cape Town, and in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, as well as at Xtrend, Anatomy and Shelflife stores
