The first day of South African Fashion Week (SAFW) has concluded, leaving a high sense of anticipation for the next three days.

The topic of sustainability has been a continuous reference for this season at SAFW and as a result natural fabrics, earth colours and upcycled garments were seen from the designers’ collections at the Day 1 shows.

Stand-out elements from the collections include a focus on textile design seen in unique prints and tie-dye fabrics, bold colours and rich textures.

These are the top trends we spotted on the Day 1 runway:

Greens

Tagwalk’s most searched colour in October was green, which is also a trend colour for 2020 as seen on various runways around the world, including South Africa’s very own SAFW.

Mantsho by Palesa Makubang showed statement green pieces, including a tiered frill dress in various shades of greens and a matching green pants ensemble.

Cindy Mfabe was more creative with her green pinstripe fabric incorporated in a frilled mini dress, pencil skirts, trousers and jackets.

Unique prints

Thabo Makhetha showed a fresh collection with a custom print featuring the brand's logo and her grandmother’s prayer sticks seen on dresses and digitally printed on leather capes.
