Prince fans will jump for joy when they hear that purple will reign as the colour of 2018.

Pantone – the self-proclaimed “colour authority” – believes that the shade ultraviolet is a reflection of what’s needed in the world today, according to The New York Times.

The colour –  a mixture of two opposing colours, red and blue  –  has a symbolic meaning of unity and bipartisanship.

"It’s also the most complex of all colours because it takes two shades that are seemingly diametrically opposed – blue and red – and brings them together to create something new," said Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone's executive director.

"We wanted to pick something that brings hope and an uplifting message.”

Pantone sent 10 people around the globe to look out for colour signals in cars, food, cosmetics, clothes and housewares, reported USA Today.

When they reconvened it was apparent that ultraviolet would be declared the colour of 2018.

In previous years, Pantone has predicted more reflective colours.

In 2015, for example, it took the relatively radical step of naming two colours for 2016: rose quartz and serenity, a pink and a blue, in acknowledgment of our increasingly gender-fluid world.

Last year, it went for a green tone to suggest new beginnings.

Pantone has been predicting colours since the start of the millennium.

Hopefully the positive power of purple will make itself known in 2018.
