We can all admit that if there ever was a cliché then Valentine’s Day would be it, an overpriced one if we might add, and yet when the roses are delivered to your desk and you open the ‘Be My Valentine’ card you can’t help but to forget the eye roll and feel a little bit special.

You see we all secretly like to feel special, even if it is corny. Feeling wanted releases serotonin – one of the feel-good hormones in our bodies. But the flowers, the card, the dinner, the bracelet and everything else can start getting expensive. In today’s uncertain economic climate, it’s advisable to cut down on unnecessary spending and rather invest in items that will last you longer than a bitcoin cycle.

A bed might seem unromantic but it’s a good investment that will benefit both your health and relationship for many years. Our friends from The Bed Shop have rounded up three things you can do in your bed (no not that type of stuff!) for a low-key, low-cost Valentine’s Day:

1. Breakfast in Bed

It says something when someone is willing to get up way before they should, venture into the kitchen, figure out where you keep the trays, cook-up something simple but delicious and bring it to you just as you wake up.

The best part of this is that your probably already have most of the stuff you need in the kitchen. Carbs don’t really count on Valentine’s Day, so we suggest doing French toast. Spice it up with fresh berries and a dollop of mascarpone on the side.

2. Picnic in bed

Okay so you might need to pop into the store for this one. You can surprise your SO with some of their favourite things to nibble on and a bottle of wine. Throw a picnic blanket on the bed and spread it all out. While you’re enjoying your favourite foods use this time to reconnect.

Ask each other where you want to travel if money was no option? What business would you start if you had the opportunity? Life gets busy and when you’ve been together after a significant amount of years you forget to ask these types of question. Mostly just assuming that the other person will tell you.

3. Netflix and chill

Snuggle up and watch your favourite romantic movie. Cuddling releases oxytocin, aka the cuddle hormone, which increases mood and bonding. Our top picks on Netflix are Crazy Stupid Love, The Notebook (it’s a classic), Hitch, Two Weeks’ Notice, Think Like a Man.
