Maybe you’re planning on taking them to a movie. If we’re really honest though, movie houses aren’t all that romantic, are they? They’re usually located in a shopping mall, involve lots of queuing, and the food is overpriced. That’s before we even get into the cost of the tickets themselves.

We think we’ve got a much better idea: make a few romantic tweaks to your lounge, cook your own popcorn (homemade tastes better) and have a romantic movie marathon.

Bridget Jones' Diary

Despite Renee Zellweger's best attempt at a British accent, Bridget Jones’ Diary quickly established itself as RomCom classic following its 2001 release. Loosely based on Pride and Prejudice, the film follows 32-year-old Bridget’s exploits as she tries to take control of her life, only to have those plans thrown into disarray by two competing love interests.

10 Things I Hate About You

An oh-so-nineties adaptation of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You helped cement the late Heath Ledger as a full-on leading man. The film stood out at a time when teen romantic comedies were all the rage, with adolescent girls across the world learning Julia Stiles’ monologue off by heart.

The Fault In Our Stars

If you haven’t watched The Fault in Our Stars, be warned: you’re going to need tissues. Based on John Green’s book of the same name, the film follows Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley), a 16-year-old cancer patient, who meets and falls in love with Gus Waters (Ansel Elgort), a similarly afflicted teen from her cancer support group. After discovering that they share a love of books, especially Grace's touchstone, "An Imperial Affliction" by Peter Van Houten, they embark on the adventure of their lives.

Ghost

At this point in history, there are probably more people familiar with the conceit behind Ghost’s “pottery scene” than the scene itself. Starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg, the film combines its romantic theme with elements of suspense and comedy. If you’re looking to convince your loved one that you’ll love them through eternity, this film should definitely be on your Valentine’s list.

Sleepless in Seattle

There was a time when Meg Ryan was the go-to anytime someone wanted a leading actress for a romantic comedy. Sleepless in Seattle is a great illustration of why this was the case. The film follows Sam Baldwin (an architect played by Tom Hanks) whose son calls into a radio station to talk about how much he misses Maggie. One of the people who hears the call is Annie Reed (played by Ryan), a newspaper reporter who isn’t happy in her current relationship. If you’re at all familiar with romantic comedies, you can probably guess how things go from there.

Rome + Juliet

Directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes, Romeo + Juliet takes Shakespeare’s classic love story and transplants it to Los Angeles in the mid 1990s. The film was so well shot and the chemistry between DiCaprio and Danes so good that no one even minded that the script retained the original Shakespearean dialogue.

If you use Google Play Movies, you could rent these six romantic classics for less than the price of two standard cinema tickets.
