C-section versus natural: the pros and cons

accreditation

Expectant moms probably have this debate with themselves all the time. While natural births can be perceived as no-brainers, C-section is also a popular birth choice.

Screen Shot 2017-02-23 at 10.35.58 AM Private midwife Xolie Makabane says, “I’m pro both; but obviously C section is advisable when there are complications. But our bodies are designed for natural birth. I’d advise a new mom to consider all options so she can make an informed decision that is safe for her and the baby.” Xolie speaks to us about the different ways of giving birth, and how to help you decide on a type that works for you. C-Section The pros

  • You can plan the birth of your child to the very last detail
  • No pain is felt during the birth
  • It might also help minimise the pain or certain complications such as tearing, incontinence, or sexual dysfunction associated with a vaginal delivery.
  • You are at lower risk of birth trauma that occurs in a vaginal birth, such as swelling or bruising.
  • You may be at decreased risk for pelvic floor injury. Women with planned caesareans have fewer cases of urinary incontinence (inability to hold urine) in the weeks following birth.
The cons Although a C-section is considered safe, it does present risks such as:
  • You stay at the hospital for a longer period
  • Breastfeeding is more difficult after a caesarean delivery. Women are uncomfortable after surgery, and they do not have immediate contact with their baby.
  • It’s more expensive than natural delivery
  • There is a longer recovery period; the healing of incisions are painful and there is discomfort in the abdomen
  • Postpartum infection may occur
Natural or vaginal delivery The pros
  • You are an active participant in the childbirth experience
  • There’s a shorter hospital stay
  • You have a quicker recovery time and you will have less postpartum pain.
  • Mothers who deliver vaginally are able to breastfeed immediately and more effectively
  • You are at a decreased risk of maternal hemorrhage, blood clots, and damage to your internal organs
  • The baby is less likely to have certain respiratory problems, including transient tachypnea of the neonate, which is fluid in the newborn's lungs natural labour triggers the release of the hormone epinephrine.
The cons
  • You risk that the skin and tissues around the vagina can stretch and tear while the fetus moves through the birth canal
  • Women who have delivered vaginally are more likely to have problems with bowel or urinary incontinence
  • Vaginal births are uncomplicated, unforeseen complications can occur during labor and delivery, including hemorrhaging(bleeding)
  • Your baby may experience physical trauma while passing through the birth canal, including bruising, swelling, and in rare cases broken bones. The risk of physical trauma increases in an assisted vaginal delivery like the use of forceps.
Remember whatever you choose, the ultimate goal is to safely give birth to a healthy baby.
