She’s a five-time South African Hip Hop Awards winner, an honours degree graduate – with distinction – and a budding entrepreneur. We chat to Gigi Lamayne.
What motivated you to do the song?
I wanted to show my fans that contrary to popular belief, as a ‘born free’ I’m not ignorant about culture and traditional beliefs. I believe in cultural practices such as the process of lobola, hence I featured Maraza, who’s married and also an advocate for culture.
How long did it take to produce the track?
The song was done in late 2016, and I had to feature Maraza, who came with his indigenous sound.
Who came up with the idea to pull the ‘engaged’ stunt?
Our marketing team came with the idea, but I didn’t want to. Social media went crazy but in the end it worked.
What can fans expect from the song and the video?
Expect to see Gigi in a different light. The terminology and the wardrobe in the video is very culture-based, from ‘imvula mlomo’ to ‘nkangaziwe’ and umqombothi.
What genre would you put lobola in?
It’s a fusion of maskandi, hip hop, upbeat tempo and a whole new sound that my fans have never heard before. This is one of my best work as I was able to rap and sing in the song.
What would be the perfect lobola for Gigi?
it’s not even about the money, but the whole process of lobola. I want the real deal, the family must stand at the gate and recitemy clan names.
