Actress and fitness enthusiast aims to encourage, develop and support young matriculants to invest in their future through this initiative.
The 27 dresses annual initiative by actress Thandy Matlaila is celebrating three years this since inception. She shares with what it entails.
How did you come up with the initiative?It was inspired by a movie titled 27 Dresses. Also, the fact in 2014 I was turning 27 I wanted to do something for the community because not every child is privileged. I want to teach children that hard work will always get them where they you want to be. The main aim is to collect and donate dresses for deserving matriculants for their matric farewell.
What kind of dresses do you look for?27 Dresses calls on public figures to donate dresses they’ve worn at past events, which are still intact. The donated dresses are handed over to girls in high school going to their matric farewell but cannot afford to get a custom-made dress.
How does the criterion selection work?The dress recipients will be determined by how well they do at school and how they have contributed to a better community, either by participation, excelling at school despite trying circumstances and contribution to the community via community projects. Teachers also assist us with the process; I have visited the selected schools in Alexandra that will be part of this initiative. I also went on to give motivational talks, alongside Keabetswe Motlokwa of Capricorn FM.
When and where does it take place?It is set to take place on the 3 September at the Apollo Hotel in Randburg.
What are you up to at the moment?I am currently working on a new role on Mzansi Magic telenovela. I won’t reveal more about it – all I can say is expect the unexpected. Fitness is a huge element in my life hence I have been named the new ambassador for a sporting brand.
