The two groups will join an already impressive line-up of artists at the festival such as international heavyweights Common, Imagination featuring Leee John, Alexander O'Neal, Omar and Femi Kuti as well as local talent Hugh Masekela, Thandiswa Mazwai and Black Coffee.
In addition to Bongo Maffin and TKZee selecting their own material to perform, audiences will be invited to choose four songs to be performed by each band at the festival.
Made up of three school friends, Tokollo Tshabalala, Kabelo Mabalane and Zwai Bala, TKZee ignited the South African music scene in 1996, fast becoming the top-selling kwaito group in the country. Their first breakthrough hit, Palafala, sampled Joni Mitchell’s 1970 hit, Big Yellow Taxi, and sold more than 100,000 copies.
Made up of Jah Seed, Thandiswa Mazwai, Stoan Seate and Speedy, Bongo Maffin was formed by Zimbabwe-born musician and DJ, Appleseed (born Oscar Appleseed), in 1996. The band built up a solid fan base in South Africa before exploring the international music arena and gaining appreciation in France, England and Denmark.
