Her skits and re-enactments in various online videos will leave you in stitches. She knows exactly how to portray ‘Our Zulu Mom’ and turn situations relatable and downright hilarious - no wonder she’s a viral sensation on Black Twitter.

You’ve been receiving so much love on Twitter and social media in general, but who is Wendy?

Wendy is a young black creative born in Durban but raised in Empangeni. She now lives in Cape Town and she’s someone who has used creativity and humour to ease the stresses of being her in her twenties. She loves God and thinks music and comedy are by far His greatest inventions!

How did you know that you’re actually funny and can take comedy seriously?

Comedy thrives on response. I think I knew that I was a comedy writer or creative when people responded positively to my content. I knew that I should start taking it seriously when people started engaging with it in ways I could never have imagined. Everything started when my phone rang and I was on the radio talking about it, and when my emails came alive because people wanted to write about it. That’s when I started thinking that this is becoming something I didn’t think it would ever become.

How would you describe your humour?

Relatable. I make fun of things and people that we all know, or have experienced at some point in our lives. You laugh because it reminds you of someone or something in your own life, especially if you’re a Zulu person. I feel like my content has the potential to hold up a mirror and shine a spotlight on some of the stereotypes that come with that identity and possibly even bring you closer to yourself.

What inspires your skits and adlibs?

Boredom (jokes!). I’m always looking for ideas and even when I’m not looking for them, they find me! I’ve

realised that there is a lot to laugh about, and even in times of pain and stress, I’m always able to cheer myself up. I think it’s important to feel things as they are and allow yourself to be present with every emotion, but I also believe that comedy has the power to provide relief.

Besides making us laugh, what else do you do?

I’m in the social media and marketing world, but I am transitioning into TV writing! I’m starting a new job at a film and TV production company in October and picking my entire life up and leaving for Joburg! But my content across all my platforms won’t be affected. My tribe would be happy to know that!
