Spree gave the youth free reign on a campaign and they came through

accreditation

The campaign from SA’s leading online fashion store, collaborated with a group of young creatives to direct, style, shoot and produce the launch of the AW18 season for the category in an effort to engage with, while empowering, young South Africans.

Spree gave the group full reign on the campaign in order to produce authentic images and expose the realness of African Gen Z’s, and the end results are stunning.

Speaking about her inspiration for the shoot, Photographer Tamika Burt (18) said, “I was mostly inspired by the modern and upcoming streetwear initiatives and designers. I decided to take that inspiration and give it a youthful twist, edgy yet innocent. Young people are exploring the world and their identities which is often expressed through art, especially in a street environment.”

Spree’s Head of Customer Interaction & Marketing, Esther Hoogstad comments, “The South African youth of today see things very differently, and are an incredibly powerful creative force. We wanted to showcase the very best young talents and create a platform that excites and inspires who we are trying to reach.”

Youth run Spree Q&A:

Tamika Burt (18): Photographer

What’s exciting about being a South African youth right now?

I think the entire country is excited with the political changes taking place. We have to have faith and believe in the new leadership. That they recognise that the youth of the country is the future. Being a young South African is extremely exciting because there are so many interesting and fun things to do as well as people to meet. It is the age that people are trying to find themselves and just exploring, being adventurous and taking risks is the way I’ve got to where I am.

Musa Nyangiwe (19): Stylist

In what ways has your art/talent enabled you to shape your own future, and what advice would you give to other young people to empower them to realise theirs?

Because of my talent, I’ve been able to set a clearer path of what I want to do with my life and where I see myself in a few years. Being aware of my passion at a young age has dramatically changed the way I look at life; my dreams have changed into realistic goals hence I’m more confident in creating my own future. As for advice to other young people, I would say just go for it; whatever it is just do it. People always ask how I started my journey and the answer is simple: just start and not worry about success or failure.

Tamsin Howells (19): Makeup Artist

How does SA youth culture and style reflect or differ from what’s happening internationally?

I think SA youth culture and style weren’t often very acknowledged before, but lately that’s been starting to change. South Africa has its own incredible and diverse culture and I think that’s so often showcased through youth style and art. However, I think SA youth are still very up to date on what’s happening internationally and use that as an influence towards culture and style, just with their own added twist of being South African.

Anele Hlongwane (21): Videographer

Do you think that there is enough opportunity currently available for young artists in SA? What could be done to improve/change this?

The art scene is something that is growing largely within South Africa. This massive growth leaves a lot of space for the South African youth to move into. In other countries with established film industries, it becomes hard to break in, something that we suffer from less. If young artists are keen, hungry and have the motivation, there is a lot of opportunities for them to grow. What we need to grow is the support of the country. We have amazing filmmakers and fashion designers in this country, we just need the support from everyone in order to grow.
